Greek musician Sofia Labropoulou is a kanun player and composer who has developed a distinct sound by merging the worlds of Greek and Mediterranean folk, classical Ottoman, western medieval, experimental and contemporary music.
Although she is classically trained, it was love at first sight when she first encountered the kanun almost a decade later. With her Byzantine music degree in hand, she moved to Istanbul in 2003 to pursue her love of the kanun and to study Ottoman music.
As a soloist, she frequently collaborates with world-renowned musicians of various musical traditions from Africa, Europe and the Middle East. When she is not travelling, she can be found composing music for films and documentaries or presenting kanun and Greek folk music masterclasses worldwide. After years of playing together with Vassilis Ketentzoglou, Butterfly, the duoʼs first album, was released by Odradek Records. She currently splits her time between Vienna, Austria and Athens, Greece.
